Happy Valentine's Day - Tell it to the Birds - Heart Feeder

Last year we had a lot of snow, lots more than this year. We haven't really had any that's stayed around very long this year, so it's been nice to see the hills covered with the white stuff these last few days . However, the temperature is rising and it's melting very quickly.

I  remember being very shocked last year to spot birds eating my dog's poop (cacca in Italian) out in the
garden. I'm not sure if birds always eat it in times of strife or it was because my dog had eaten the seeds that I put out for the birds. I put a board of seeds and crumbs out for them on a mound of snow but my cheeky mutt found a way of getting to the top.
This year I thought I would make something to hang in the tree. There is a  horsechestnut tree is in front of the kitchen window, so I hung my creations there and  we get the added bonus of watching the birds at meal times.

I had quite a glut of  coathangers from the drycleaners and this is what I came up with. It's a really simple two minute project;

Take a coathanger and cut it with a pair of pliers just before the kink on one side.

 Bend the shortest piece straight down.

Using the pliers straighten out the longest  wire as much as possible and shape into a rough circle.
 Make a hook at the end and hook it to the other side.
Make a hook at the bottom of the shortest wire and hook it to the bottom of the circle and form a point (bottom of heart).

Fashion into a heart shape  that you like. It doesn't need to be perfect or symmetrical.

Unhook the bottom wire and push on soft fruits or slices (apples/oranges/banana/grapes) or ceareal bars.
I used pomegranate slices, grapes, sunflower heads, a strawberry. I discovered that it's best to slice the fruit (duh!) and that Robins go mad for pomegranates.
